smartcube® - Drilling Information System (DIS) 

In cooperation with the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam we have developed the Drilling Information System (DIS). A framework / toolkit to establish information systems.

The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) needs an on-site information system for scientific drilling projects. Because most ICDP projects have very different requirements concerning information management a generic framework for the generation of individual information systems has been designed. The framework provides a smart user interface and integrated functions for system implementation.

ICDP and smartcube are using the DIS to implement and deploy customized information systems for different drilling projects all over the world.


DIS-Long Valley

DIS-Cal Tech

The on-site information system that was established for the Hawaiian Scientific Drilling Project will be shifted to the California Institute of Technology in Los Angeles after the work at the drilling location has finished. This system will be extended with features to manage the results of all analysis that are made on the cores of the drilling project. These analyses are made on institutes all over the world and the DIS at the Cal Tech is used as central database for all scientific investigations.

  • Kola Superdeep Borehole (KSDB), Russia.

  • Cambaltica Drilling Project, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.


smartcube® - ExpeditionDIS                              

The ExpeditionDIS was developed on behalf of and in cooperation with ICDP and ECORD Science Operator-ESO as the successor of the DIS for ICDP-projects and IODP-MSP-Expeditions.

The ExpeditionDIS has been used by the following expeditions / projects:

smartcube® - CurationDIS                                     

The CurationDIS  is  specialized version of the ExpeditionDIS that is used at Core Repositories to archive and manage the data of all stored cores, sections and samples. It  was developed on behalf of and in cooperation with ICDPECORD Science Operator  and MARUM for the IODP Core Repository in Bremen.

smartcube® - Camera Image Scanner            

The Camera Image Scanner (CIS) is a special device to make scans of slabbed and unrolled cores to archive digital copies of the core surfaces. Furthermore the device can be used to make overview pictures of core boxes, cuttings and thin sections or other surfaces.

smartcube® - Scientific Information System


As partner of the Sahel-Doukkala Scientific Information Network (SaDIN), a project, supported by the EU LIFE-Program and in cooperation with the Université Chouaib Doukkali El Jadida and the GeoForschungsZentrum-Potsdam, smartcube has developed the Scientific Information System (SIS).

The scientific and technical objectives of SaDIN are focused on the evaluation of the potential of aquifiers in the Sahel-Doukkala region of Morocco and their pollution caused by pumping of groundwater. This investigations are accompanied by epidemiological research on the local population, which would be seriously affected by groundwater pollution, as well as investigations on environmental parameters, such as wildlife, vegetation and illegal sewage waste dumps.

The SIS was developed to archive the data of the different investigations, it contains input forms, reports and visualization facilities for the different data sets. A special map based interface for data display and retrieval was developed and the XSIS-Internet-interface was implemented to publish the data to the World Wide Web.






The GEOCOST-WWW is a development of an internet interface for a Microsoft Excel* based application. The Geothermal-Group at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam has developed a complex application to make economic calculations for geothermal power plants. The developed interface makes it possible to use this application through the internet.
